Job function

The Laboratory Assistant will ensure that laboratory services of the health facility, are well planned for, provided with necessary resources and implemented in accordance with set policies and standards. They will ensure that laboratory services at the site are well managed, laboratory investigations on clients are carried out, the required health quality control of laboratory reagents and equipment is maintained and laboratory reagents and supplies are effectively used.

Qualifications and experience

• A Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques or its equivalent from a recognized Institution.

• Must be registered with the Allied Health Professional Council.

• Must have a valid Practicing License.

• A minimum of two years of full-time relevant work experience as a laboratory assistant in a hospital or health facility setting

• Key personal competences in laboratory services, team management,

• communication skills, Persuasive and convincing, self-motivated and able to demonstrate high initiative

• Must be computer literate and able to use basic computer software

Responsibilities

• Preparing Laboratory reagents and stains for routine investigations.

• Observing safety and quality assurance practices in laboratories

• Cleaning the laboratory equipment regularly.

• Safely disposing off laboratory waste.

• Participate in continuous professional development.

• Carry out phlebotomy for all tests to be conducted;

• Receive/collect, lab samples and analyze/test them;

• Keep accurate records and confidentiality of tests conducted;

• Carry out laboratory tests & produce accurate results and submitting reports;

• Participate in developing and dating of SOPs;

• Participate in periodic report writing by compiling reports on tests and assist in drawing-up laboratory plans and budgets;

• Carry out quality control of laboratory reagents and equipment;

• Adhere to the professional Code of Conduct and Ethics.

• Carryout and duties as may be assigned by supervisor
