Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda
Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda
The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) in partnership with the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) with the support of the Cultural Protection Fund (British Council) is embarking on a project: Withstanding change: heritage amongst climate uncertainty aimed at restoring the Sir Apollo Kaggwa cultural heritage site in Gayaza-Manyagwa, Wakiso District.
The restoration exercise is part of a larger project targeting 6 countries, spanning the two Cultural Protection Fund regions of Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) and East Africa. In each country, the project will carry out priority interventions to a historic site that is threatened by the effects of climate change, with a focus on built heritage. The project focuses on architecturally unique historic buildings that serve/served a public function and are at risk due to the effects of climate change.
The Sir Apollo Kaggwa Cultural Heritage site in Gayaza-Manyangwa comprises a 16-roomed residential house built in 1890s, a mausoleum (where two former Prime Ministers of Buganda are buried Sir Apollo Kaggwa and his son Michael Kawalya Kaggwa) and a church built by Sir Apollo Kaggwa in 1903. The site has endured increased evapotranspiration due to higher temperatures, more frequent and protracted heat extremes, longer periods between rainfall events and intensification of droughts that have impacted the buildings. Flash floods too, have heavily affected the foundation of the over 120-years-old buildings, partly due to increases in rainfall intensity resulting in increased surface runoffs.
It is expected that the project will restore the site and open it to the public with a community museum to support community learning.
CCFU therefore seeks to recruit a Heritage Site Coordinator who will be in charge of supervising the restoration works. This will be a two-year part-time job, starting January 2023.
